The spontaneity of the ``open microphone'' format isn't just for comedians and poets, at least in Cambridge. Last year, Carolyn Merritt and K.C. Chun began presenting ``Open Floor'' evenings at Green Street Studios.(future location TBA) Now dancers and choreographers gather there regularly to perform works in progress and to show finished pieces in a more relaxed, informal setting. The next ``Open Floor'' occurs Sunday night from 7 to 8:30. If you want to show your own work (limited to 10 minutes), be there by 6:30 to register and warm up in the studio. A donation of $3-$5 is requested, and musicians also are encouraged to participate.

``Basically, anyone who shows up is welcome to perform, or just watch,'' said Heather McQuiston, who is becoming known as a rising contemporary choreographer here and presented a new dance at ``Open Floor'' last month. Call her at 617-522-2079 for more information about ``Open Floor.'' Future Open floors are scheduled for the first Sunday of the month starting in January 2002
