So what exactly is Kinaesthetics Lab?

We are a student group, run entirely by students. Our faculty advisor is Rebecca Rice, a professional choreographer who also teaches modern dance at MIT through the Physical Education program. Our focus is on choreography rather than on performance, and on dance as an art form rather than as entertainment. We provide  feedback to members about their choreography at every stage of the creative process. We also learn about choreography through informal workshops during our weekly open studio work times, as well as during formal workshops that are held several times each semester and taught by a professional choreographer. We have explored many themes, including shape, space, time, abstraction, improvisation, and working with a live musician.

Who can join Kinaesthetics Lab?

Membership is open to everyone in the MIT community: students, staff, faculty, spouses.... There are no prerequisites and no required classes.

What if I'm not a dancer?

Anyone can join Kinaesthetics Lab, regardless of previous dance experience (or lack thereof). Some of our current members have many years of dance training, but others have little or no formal training in dance.

What kinds of dance does Kinaesthetics Lab perform?

Kinaesthetics Lab members are encouraged to find their own voice as dancers and choreographers. We welcome all styles and backgrounds. At our most recent performance, dance styles included acrobatics/contortion, ballet, belly dance, contact improvisation, group improvisation, and modern dance.

Can I come to workshops even if I'm not a member?

Non-members are invited to attend formal workshops, but only members can come to open studio work times and informal workshops.

Is there a membership fee?

Yes, membership dues are collected at each term and are used to help fund workshops and performances. We often work with Martin Case, and excellent musician who provides percussion, piano, and woodwind accompaniment for workshops and performances. Last year membership dues were $10 per semester, and formal workshops cost $5 for members and $10 for non-members. There is no charge for informal workshops. These amounts are subject to change, and as we become more established we hope to be able to reduce them or eliminate them completely.

How do I join?

New members are always welcome! To join, email us at kinaesthetics-officers or come see us at the Activities Midway during Orientation.
