Research Projects Currently Underway or Completed:

Superconducting Generator: Development of advanced experimental machines with unique features; ratings of 60 kVA, 3 MVA and 10 MVA. Electrical machine design and design and fabrication of armature windings. Evaluation of machine configurations, including the possible use of high-temperature superconductors, economic evaluations and system interaction characteristics.

Novice Design Assistant: For design of induction motors in a production environment. Incorporates an expert system as a librarian ; Can do extrapolations on existing designs. A Non Expert system synthesizes new designs using ``monte-carlo" techniques and multi-attribute evaluation.

Electric Ships: Studies done in conjunction with colleagues in the Ocean Engineering section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT and active duty United States Navy officers doing graduate study at MIT. Advanced propulsion systems for naval ships, including electric propulsion and integrated propulsion and ship service systems. Simulation, stability, survivability and control studies for shipboard electric power and propulsion systems.

Enhanced TORUS Generator:  This is a novel hybrid of a permanent magnet generator and doubly fed machine intended to improve the efficiency and power density of low speed machines for use as direct drive or intermediate speed wind turbine generators.

RAPID: Radial PAnel Installation Designer is an expert data base system useful for design and maintenance of building wiring systems.

Intelligent Monitoring of Equipment and Systems: Model-based monitoring, non-intrusive techniques, trend analysis and advanced signal-processing techniques: Transformer Monitoring using acoustic frequency vibrations to determine structural integrity; trend analysis; Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring; Equipment Performance Monitoring.

Vehicle Technology: Application of advanced electrical           engineering techniques to automobiles can make for more efficient,     reliable and higher performing vehicles.           Variable Reluctance and permanent magnet drive motors and starter/generators; development of intelligent charging coupling for electric cars.

Advanced motor/generator machines for Kinetic Energy Storage Systems:

Design of squirrel cage rotors with high conductivity material: Cast copper gives the opportunity to improve the performance of integral horsepower induction motors, if the profile of rotor conductors is right.

Additional activities related to electric ships and ship propulsion:

In 1996 and 1997, I served on an expert panel advising the Office of Naval Research and the Defense Advanced Projects Research Administration on          the state of technology for future ``more electric" ships. During the spring and summer of 2005 I served on a failure review panel for the Naval Sea Systems Command.
