Numerical optimization is in principle a rather mature field for applications in the industry using commercialized programs. For applications with CFD the bottleneck is the hugh amount of computational time due to the large number of CFD simulations. Therefore these CFD optimizations can hardly be applied in current development cycles of any technical component. It is therefore necessary to find either 'simpler' methods for optimization (simpler in the sense of cheaper or faster) or better ones which extract more information out of each simulation. Another possibility could be a method that generates the best possible starting point for further optimization.


As example, the pictures show the design space of an automotive leg room vent (above) and the result of a CFD topology optimization for minimizing the pressure loss (left). The result has been computed with only one CFD simulation-run.
The purpose of this minisymposium is to provide a forum for the presentation of new and/or improved computational algorithms for optimization in the area of computational fluid mechanics. Topics of interest include topology optimization, conjugate gradient methods, response surface methods. Contributions that address large-scale computing issues are particularly encouraged.
