Forbes is a Professor of Economics at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. She has recently rotated between academia and policy positions in the U.S. Government. She served as a Member of the White House's Council of Economic Advisers from 2003 to 2005 (where she was the youngest person to ever hold this position) and currently serves as a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers for the state of Massachusetts. Her academic research addresses policy-related questions in international finance and development economics. Recent projects examine why foreigners invest in the United States, how U.S. tax policy affects capital flows, the role of banks in transmitting crises internationally, the impact of capital controls on investment decisions, and the effect of financial crises and currency depreciations on companies around the world. Forbes has also written extensively on financial contagion (including a co-edited book International Financial Contagion) as well as the relationship between income inequality and economic growth.
Forbes is on the executive committee and board of Deworm the World, an organization focused on improving education in the developing world through school-based deworming. She was recently honored as a "Young Global Leader" as part of the World Economic Forum at Davos. From 2001-2002 she worked at the U.S. Treasury Department as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Quantitative Policy Analysis, Latin American and Caribbean Nations. She is a research associate at the NBER, a member of the Trilateral Commission, a member of the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Economic Advisers, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a vice-chair of the Academic Advisory Board at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Center for Global Development and Center for Geoeconomic Studies (at the Council on Foreign Relations). She has also been a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Board, ICRIER and IMF. Before joining MIT, Forbes worked at the World Bank and Morgan Stanley.
