1958 Packard Hawk Restoration Project
This restoration of a 1958 Packard Hawk is an ongoing project by my father and me. The car was purchased from my grandfather five years ago and we were able to get it to run before it was torn apart. This is a complete restoration, with the drive train and interior completely removed. The engine block and heads were reconditioned by Mike's Motor Service of Mendon, MA. All other work was done by either my father or me. It will be completely stock and in show condition when finished, hopefully in the spring of 2004.
Background: Our Hawk is #219 of only 588 that were ever built. The year 1958 was the last year of any Packard name-bearing cars after the merger of the company with Studebaker in 1954. After 1956, all Packard cars became rebadged Studebakers with changes mostly in the bumpers, nose, trunk lid, trim, and interiors. The Packard Hawk is mechanically identical to the Studebaker Golden Hawk apart from these differences. It boasts 275 hp from a 289 cubic inch Studebaker engine with a McCulloch supercharger. It was advertised as a luxury sports car and at a price of $3995 was more expensive than most other cars on the market, including the Corvette.
