Frequently Asked Questions

I am a technical writer with several years of experience, and I'm interested in becoming a science journalist. Would I be eligible for the fellowship?

Unfortunately, no. The fellowship is meant for experienced journalists. See our eligibility page for more information.

Where can I find information about becoming a science journalist?

Consider becoming a member of the National Association of Science Writers. Also, see links in our resources menu.

When do the nine-month fellowships begin?

The fellowships follow MIT's academic calendar, running from August 15 to May 15.

I can't get away from my job for nine months, do you have any short-term fellowships?

Yes. We offer week-long fellowships that focus on specific topics. These boot camps, as we call them, are held twice a year, in the fall and in the spring.

Is health insurance provided for nine-month Fellows?

The Knight Fellowships subsidizes part of the cost of the MIT Affiliate Health Plan.

Are there course requirements during the year?

Fellows must attend our twice-weekly seminars. All other courses are chosen by the Fellows idividually.

How far in advance can I apply for a nine-month fellowship?

You can apply as early as you like, but your materials will not be reviewed until the day after the application deadline, March 1.

Can I re-apply if I'm rejected the first time?

Yes, but you should consider submitting new application materials. Contact us to find out if you can resubmit letters of recommendation.

I am a freelancer. Should I bother applying, or is the fellowship just for staff writers?

Freelancers are encouraged to apply. Along with the other application materials, we ask freelancers to submit a list of jobs with short descriptions of the work done.
