Knight Science Journalism Fellowships at MIT

Woods Hole Field Trip

Collecting Boat

Gemma
Knights take an excursion on the R/V Gemma, the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) collecting vessel. The scallop dredge brings a variety of sea floor specimens to the surface for Fellows to examine.

Hands-on Learning
Fellows get to view the marine organisms up close, and the crew members answer questions and explain how MBL uses different organisms for research. Here, Fellows observe zoo-plankton samples.

horseshoe crab

Horseshoe Crab
David Paterson (02-03) examines the underside of a horseshoe crab.

Marine Resources Center

Marine Resources Center
After the boat ride, Fellows tour the Marine Resources Center, where live organisms are kept for research. One highlight is seeing the shark tank at feeding time.

Families Welcome
Fellows' families can tour the Marine Resources Center, too.

WHOI
Fellows visit facilities at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and talk to researchers about their work.

Underwater Instruments
Much of the research at WHOI is made possible by underwater exploration vehicles, like REMUS (Remote Environmental Monitoring Units) seen here. Fellows get an up-close look and learn how the vehicles can be modified for use on various missions.

Picturesque
Along with lots of scientific talks, Fellows get a chance to see some beautiful New England views.

clambake

Clambake
Fellows get a taste of New England at a clambake dinner. Here, Martin Uhlir (04-05) of the Czech Republic sizes up his first lobster.
