NEWTRTFM 1.0 - May 9, 1994
--------------------------
NewtRTFM is a Newton programming reference created by Sandeep Shah of K2 Consultants and published by Creative Digital Systems, the publishers of the ViewFrame Newton debugger and PIE Developers magazine. Containing nearly 800 topics, NewtRTFM is a concise electronic summary of the NTK 1.0.1 documentation. A Newton-resident program with superior navigation, searching and experimentation capabilities, NewtRTFM essentially makes the NTK printed documentation obsolete and speeds Newton prototyping and development.

NewtRTFM lets a programmer browse its database by category, topic, partial string match, or sequentially. For each detailed topic the program includes a summary, an explanation of each function's arguments and return value where appropriate, a sample program, and customized developer notes which are integrated with the Newton's NotePad application and can be stored in user-designated folders. Many of the samples are live NewtonScript examples that can be executed. In addition, a developer can easily send the sample code to either the ViewFrame Newton debugger or the NTK's Inspector window for further examination or experimentation.

WHAT'S INCLUDED WITH THIS PACKAGE
--------------------------------
This package includes four items:

¥	this ReadMe text file;
¥	a demo version of NewtRTFM that includes all the program's features but a limited number of topics (about 200);
¥	the NewtRTFM documentation in Common Ground format for the Macintosh. Anyone wanting it in Windows format should contact Creative Digital Systems.
¥	a Common Ground Macintosh document of frequently asked questions about NewtRTFM.

NewtRTFM is available from Creative Digital Systems on either Windows or Macintosh-formatted disks. It's retail price is $90, $80 for PIE Developers subscribers. Until June 30, NewtRTFM is available for a special introductory price of $70 plus shipping and handling. Site licenses are available.

We hope you enjoy this demo. Please forward your comments, quesions and suggestions to Creative Digital Systems (contact information is at the end of this file).

KNOWN PROBLEMS IN VERSION 1.0
-----------------------------
As of this writing NewtRTFM has the following known problems:

clRemoteView
-------------
The example of clRemoteView (and the class itself to the best of our knowledge) does not work as well as we would like. After visiting the example (show) page, the topics button does not function properly. Also it does not update the topic name if a different one is selected.

If you tap on the topics button the system report a bogus error (8). The workaround is to close the application and reopen it (make sure that you either change the topic or tap on the side tab other than show before you close it else you will have the same problem as before).

Note Page
---------
Information entered on a note page is updated whenever a different topic is selected, a different tab (info, args or show) is tapped, or the application is closed. Please remember that because of a bug in the system Notepad in the classic MessagePad (it works fine for MP 110), the newly updated note is not immediately visible. You can work around this by tapping the overview button in the Notepad app and select the note to get to the newly created note. (It is not a serious problem, because, the integration feature would be useful over a longer period of time, ie. you write a note in NewtRTFM now and it gets referred whenever next time you are going through your notepad notes, in the appropriate filing folder). Other way works as expected, ie. if you write a note about some topic and then select it from NewtRTFM, you see it immediately.

Another strange error may be encountered if you delete a polygonview child of the note page (non-text child), by a scrubbing action (or reshaping points), you may get a -48401 error. (This is a newly discovered bug in clEditView: we are looking for a workaround).

Installation/Removal
-------------------
Newton has a problem in reclaiming the package space from the store (either Internal or PCMCIA cards), whenver there is some error during removal of the package. An empirical workaround is to wait for a while before doing anything (taps, close/open apps, etc) immediately after removing a largish application. Please follow this guideline after removing NewtRTFM.
