Scrappy
Scrappy maintains a scrapboard list of up to 26 text items and a list of up to 23 frequently used words/phrases (these numbers are for the Message Padª and will vary depending on the particular Newtonª platform), using a global, floating, draggable button pallet. You can cut from and paste to any text area, across all applications. The scrapboard receives text upon copy/cut and releases it upon paste. The word list receives information upon copy/cut, but retains the word upon paste. You can clear the entire word list or individual words on demand. The word list is maintained in sorted text order and the scrapboard list is maintained in arrival order. Drag the drag icon to move the floating pallet. Tap the drag icon and get a help screen. Since the help screen is a separate module, you can remove it from your Newton after you learn the program and thus save some memory.
Scrappy was developed out of a need to have an easy way to move text around the Newton without too much ado. With recognition being what it is (excellent for some and so so for others) and the need to perform a variety of repetitive tasks requiring movement of multiple words/phrases, I came up with this program. One objective was to minimize screen real estate and memory consumed by the application. Another was to leverage the current capabilities/applications base for the Newton.
Please install 'scrappy.pkg' and 'scraphlp.pkg' packages onto your Newton using the Newton Connection Kit. Install the Scrappy package in internal RAM. This way, you won't lose any scrapboard/word list data when you change cards.
After you know the program, you can remove the 'ScrapHelp' application to save about 6k of memory.
If you are upgrading from Lil'Scrappy, be sure to paste your clipboard entry and any words to an empty note pad entry before you load Scrappy. This way, you can recover these entries after loading Scrappy, as these items will be deleted when you install the new version. Future upgrades of Scrappy will not have this restriction - you will be able to upgrade without any data loss!
General
¥ Tap the drag icon to get this help.
¥ When you know the program well enough, remove the Scrappy Help application from your Newton and you will have another 6k of RAM available.
¥ Drag the button pallet to any location on the screen using the drag icon. This application will work on any size Newton screen (future).
¥ Tap the Scrappy clipboard icon in the Extras Drawer to toggle the button pallet on and off.
¥ Text will be remembered across resets. When performing a backup via the Connection Kit, the current list of words and the scrapboard will be archived.
¥ If you remove this application, you will lose the text list and any scrapboard entries. This is because there is a soup preferences entry that is tied to the application. When the application exits stage left, so too will the text.
¥ If you install the Scrappy application internally, you will avoid losing the scrapboard and word list capability when changing PCMCIA cards.
¥ Lists can only be as long as a popup can be tall (popups on Newton don't scroll yet), but this shouldn't place undo restrictions on you, under normal circumstances.

Usage Notes
¥ Pasted text will sometimes appear to go into the bit bucket. It hasn't - it has gone to an insertion point of an application which may not even be visible. If keyboard focus is lost, such as when you move from one "Names" field to the next and forget to tap in the new field to get focus, an alert appears warning of this condition.
¥ When pasting to some fields, such as an application FAX slip field, the program may appear to be lost in space - it isn't, its' working - just be patient.
¥ Occasionally, very large text pasting will cause the Newton to re-boot. It appears to only occur under situations of low memory availability.
