The women's lacrosse squad split their two games on their Spring trip to Florida and that seemed to set the tone for their 1996 season. The Engineers were never able to truly gain consistency as they played to a 4-6 record overall and a 2-3 record in the New England Women's 8.

Perhaps the best game of the year was a 13-14 overtime loss to Mount Holyoke College at home in the last regular season game. Mount Holyoke had been the NEW 8 regular season champion and tournament runner-up in 1995. Close wins over Plymouth State (12-11) and Wheaton (11-10) during the regular season, and relatively easy victories over Smith and New England College were the squad's wins. Wheaton eliminated the Engineers in the first round of the NEW 8 Tournament.

Ann Torres, a senior attack, became the all-time leading scorer for MIT women's lacrosse during the season. She was named to the NEW 8 All-Conference team for the second time in her career. Katherine Merrilees, a junior midfielder was also selected. Merrilees led the Engineers in scoring in 1996 with 24 goals and 2 assists. Torres was voted the team's most valuable player, while first year Anne Lee was selected most improved, amd Maddy Burke earned team rookie of the year honors.
