ASSIGNMENT SYNOPSIS

INVESTIGATING A RESEARCH TOPIC/SITE IN THE BOSTON REGION

By Friday, February 16, you must choose a site that will be the subject of three photographic assignments and a final essay of images and words. Your site should be a place you can visit regularly throughout the semester, a place that intrigues you and will give scope to the topics(s) you plan to research. It can be your studio or thesis site or a place you are studying for another course. Limit the size of the site (all of Roxbury is too big). Thinking about the rationale for bounding the site may be key to deciphering its identity or at least those attributes that you want to focus on.

All assignments are due at times and dates indicated below. Late projects will receive a reduction in grade. It is very important to keep up with the assignments, for they build on one another and form a basis for class discussion. There will be no extensions without prior, written, consent.

We will be using three platforms for review of assignments: Flickr, Miro, and personal websites. Flickr is ideal for reviewing assignments since it permits students to comment on each others' photos. We will use Miro boards for posting all photos for review in individual meetings and as a space to construct the photo essays. Your own class websites will serve as the archive for assignments.

Site Selection: Due by 7PM Friday, February 16 under Assignments on Canvas. Please describe where the site is and why it is interesting, why you are drawn to it. What questions does the place raise, what aspects of it do you hope to explore photographically?

Light: Five photos due on Flickr by 8AM Monday, February 19. We will review in class on Wednesday, February 21. All photos, including the five posted to Flickr must also be uploaded to your Miro board on Monday, February 19. Light assignment due on your own class website Friday, March 1.

Significant Detail: Post five photos on Flickr and your own class website by 8AM Monday, March 11. We will review in class on Wednesday, March 13. Post all photos taken to date on your Miro board for discussion in individual meetings that week.

Pairs: Post photo pairs on Flickr by 8AM Monday, April 1. We will review in class on Wednesday, April 3. Post the Pairs to your own website by Friday, April 5.
