13th annual True Colors Conference (formerly known as Children From The Shadows)
This year's conference, Building Inclusive Communities: A Best Practices Conference, will be returning to Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT on Friday March 24th and Saturday March 25th. True Colors is the largest LGBTQIA/sexual minority youth issues conference in existence. Last year's conference, “True Colors XII: Over the Rainbow and Out of the Box,” drew over 2,700 participants from 20 states as well as abroad. This year's conference is on track to be even bigger and better than last year. In addition to our General, Youth (up to age 23), College, and Professional workshops as well as our Activist Institute and Job/Career Fair, we are also unveiling a new Best Practices track of workshops. Conference attendees can also register to receive up to 12 CEU credits.
It is our plan to expand the number of workshops offered in the College track this year. We will be accepting workshop proposals through December 9th, 2005. Past college workshops have included, but are certainly not limited to:
- Coming out to your room-mate(s)
- Same-sex domestic violence
- Anti-racism for white queers
- Building Community: LGBT/Same Gender
- Loving People of Color networking space
- Finding Common Ground: building coalitions among progressive social justice communities
- Creating a safe schools program on your campus
- Starting a speaker's bureau on campus
- Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships
- Impact of Media
- Queer Studies
- Transfeminism
- Job interview issues and skills
- Queerying the work force: Queer eye for the working gye (or grrl or boydyke or..)
- Negotiating Safer Sex
- Body Images (LGBTI together or separately)
- Exploring gender images and expressions
- Coming out in the Classroom
- Organizing/publicizing events for LGBT groups
Anyone is welcomed to submit a workshop proposal, including students. Workshop presenters are eligible for free registration. There are 3 workshop slots each day, with between 40-50 different workshops per session on Friday and about half that on Saturday (we will be offering just as many college workshops per session on Saturday as on Friday, but there will be less youth workshops because less high schools attend on Saturday) There are also opening and closing ceremonies on each day, featuring performers from around the country.
As a college student and former president of CCSU's student LGBT group PRIDE, I understand that college groups have a limited time frame and budget when it comes to planning for items such as conferences, so I wanted to get the word out about the conference early due to that fact and due to the conference's early bird pre-registration rates. Individual students can register up until Jan 31st, 2006 at $15 for 1 day or $25 for both days. (the price afterwards jumps to $30 for 1 day and $45 for both days after January 31st.) Groups of 10 or more receive a 20% discount off of registration fees, bringing the price per person to only $12 for 1 day or $20 for both days. Early bird pre-registration prices INCLUDE LUNCH for each day that you register. (Early bird pre-registration** prices for adults are $60 for 1 day or $75 for both days.) Regular and early bird registration also includes admission to the conference dance/afterparty on Saturday night.
