Women's Studies Intellectual Forum Talk by Anthony Lioi, Writing and
Women's Studies. My talk will examine the way that novelists such as Alice Walker, Tom Spanbauer, and Hanif Kureishi have correlated bisexuality, as a sexual identity, with "mixed"-race identity, especially through the figure of the mulatto. This identification of racial and sexual mixture is remarkable, given the history of the mulatta as a symbol of illness and sterility in the biological realm and degeneracy and betrayal in the cultural realm. I will consider how each novel develops a narrative strategy to overcome what I call the disease of doubleness, and relate these strategies to the politics of sexual identity in the wake of the Sixties. The central texts for discussion will be POSSESSING THE SECRET OF JOY, THE MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MOON, and THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA, set against a background of larger debates about race and sexuality in twentieth-century literature, film, and popular culture. Please RSVP to emmh@mit.edu to join us for the lunch portion of the talk. Want Recognition? Student
