Laptop Loaner Program

Determining Eligibility

Although students are expected to acquire their own computers when possible, the Laptop Loaner Program was initiated to ensure that all students have the computational resources required to do faculty-assigned academic work. Faculty who assign activities requiring the use of a wireless laptop may request one for students who do not have their own. Requests must be made by a faculty member.

Please make sure that your situation fits the following criteria before submitting the request:

  • A laptop is necessary for each student to do the required in-class coursework.
  • The laptop will be returned when the coursework is completed.
  • Your student does not already have a computer or laptop to use for the work.

Submitting Your Request

If you feel your student is eligible to participate in the program, please explain the need in an e-mail request to laptop-request@mit.edu. Address each of the points in the list above.

Information for Program Participants

Use in other classes

The laptops loaned out to students, while intended for a particular course or program, may be used for other classes the student is enrolled in during the semester.

Laptop Configuration

The laptops come with:

  • Windows XP SP2
  • MIT Site licensed software
  • Specialized software used in particular classes may be requested. Licensing requirements for course specific software is the responsibility of the sponsoring department.
  • Wireless access and DHCP (Instructions for registering for DHCP)

Getting Service or Returning a Laptop

For service or support on a laptop please send email to laptop-loaner-program@mit.edu to make an appointment.

Once the need which justified the machine being loaned has ended, (not to exceed the end of the current semester), the machine must be returned to Information Services and Technology Academic Computing. Machines not returned on time will be charged to the Student's Bursar account.

For service or questions regarding a laptop or the program please send e-mail to: laptop-loaner-program@mit.edu
