Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Graduate Program

Five Year PhD Programs

In addition to the four year PhD program, students may apply for a fifth year through one of the following programs:

5 Year PhD Program in Linguistics with specialization in Phonology and Phonetics
5 Year PhD Program in Linguistics with specialization in Semantics
5 Year PhD Program in Psycholinguistics
5 Year PhD Program in Linguistics with specialization in Syntax

Applications to the five-year programs should be made upon completion of the generals requirement. Applicants will be asked to submit a short statement of purpose in which they lay out how the program will further their education and research. The statement should also propose a curriculum for the upcoming semesters. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their plans with relevant faculty members.

Ideally, admission will be decided on by the beginning of the sixth semester of graduate studies. Much of the additional work required for the program will take place in the sixth and seventh semesters, but prospective applicants are also encouraged to start taking relevant courses earlier, to the extent that it does not interfere with satisfying the requirements for the basic four-year program. Late admission into the program can be considered in exceptional cases.

The programs are not meant to allow students an extra year to fulfill the regular requirements of the four-year PhD program. Therefore, admission will only be offered to students who have satisfied their generals paper requirements and are in good standing.
