Grains of Rice Lineup March 13, 2005 - 6:47PM This is a preliminary lineup for the AAA Grains of Rice performance. If you said you wanted to perform, you better show up to practice. We are performing a routine similar to the one that we did at the MIT CSC Banquet. Some people had their roles changed, so we cannot just rely on our past experience to do the performance. Lineup:
IAP Practices January 1, 2005 - 6:37PM Kelvin booked IAP practices (and into February) for: Every Monday and Thursday 9:00-10:30PM Lobdell Dining (map) Our regular rooms were occupied already, so CAC switched us to Lobdell. Also, last week of IAP has no official practices booked because all Student Center Rooms are occupied for Sorority Recruitment. If anyone knows of available practice space, email lion-dance-exec. IFair Performance April 21, 2004 - 12:30AM Alright, the email was not ISA. For some reason I'm on the CSSA mailing list and they are not performing. ISA did leave us out of the schedule however. If they put us in, it will probably be right before the other IFair performances at 11:45AM. We don't have time to do a creative routine, so we are just going to do a standard routine (possibly minus stunts even). If you want to perform, you must show up at practice on Thurs. April 22 at 10:30PM. Lineup will be created from members that are present. On Friday (April 23), be at the office at 11:15AM at the latest. In other news, fairly successful CPW. Performance at the welcome fair was good to make people aware that there is Lion Dance at MIT. Not too many pre-frosh showed at the Activities Midway. Be prepared to rush a bunch of froshies next year. Go Lambda Delta! IFair Performance April 21, 2004 - 12:30AM With less than three days to the event, ISA decided to notify everyone that all performances for IFair were cancelled. Obviously, this means that we don't have to perform. However, there will still be practice on Thurs. at 10:30 like normal. In other news, fairly successful CPW. Performance at the welcome fair was good to make people aware that there is Lion Dance at MIT. Not too many pre-frosh showed at the Activities Midway. Be prepared to rush a bunch of froshies next year. Go Lambda Delta! CPW Activities April 13, 2004 - 11:15PM CPW Welcome Fair at Johnson Upstairs (indoor track). Thursday, April 15, 9-12PM. We are signed up to perform at 10:15. If you cannot make it at 9PM, please try to get to our booth by 9:45 so as equipment can be moved if it hasn't been moved already. (Lineup below.) Saturday is the Activities Midway from 4-6PM. Come if you want, no performance, so we should have enough people. Sunday is HOT POT. Starts at 8PM. Sidney Pacific 2nd Floor Kitchen (same place as dumpling night). Everyone should be there. It's followed by 2 days of no classes. Lineup:
Grains of Rice April 2, 2004 - 1:37AM Rehersal at 11:30PM on Sunday April 4 at Walker Memorial. Meet at the office at 11:00 to move equipment. Performance is at 6:00PM at Walker Memorial. Lineup:

Performance itself is at 6PM. We are the first act. After that: food. Showcase, Dumpling Night, GoR March 7, 2004 - 4:44PM We will no longer be performing at this year's Intercollegiate Lion Dance Showcase. Since Dumpling Night was moved and now can be moved back, we would like to know which date is preferred: Friday March 12 or Saturday March 13? It should begin about 6-7PM. All current members and alums are asked to come. However, this is a MIT Lion Dance only event. Haven't decided upon a location yet. Also, Grains of Rice will be on April 4th starting at 6:00PM. We want to try to get a 3 lion routine for this, so if you can go please email me and keep your schedules open for that date and practices. Banquet Wrapup February 16, 2004 - 9:45PM Awesome job at Banquet everyone. Thanks for making it a great show. If anyone has any pictures of the Banquet (or for any other performance), please send them to me so I can post them on the website. Also, Harvard CSA performance, on Friday (Feb 20) at 9:00PM. We are meeting at 7:00PM at the Lion Dance office and heading over for rehersal. After the performance, we are free to help ourselves to the 12 course buffet and other entertainment. Put up pictures from at least 6 performances. I suggest looking at the videos of the CSC New Years Banquet and International Fair performances. Performances schedule is updated as well. Take a look and email me about which ones you will be able to perform at. Some of the performance dates and times haven't been set yet. Remember practice times for IAP are below. IAP Practice Schedule January 4, 2004 - 11:30PM All practices are at 9:00 to 10:00 Monday, January 5, 2004 Room 491 Thursday, January 8, 2004 Room 407 Monday, January 12, 2004 Room 491 Thursday, January 15, 2004 Room 407 Monday, January 19, 2004 Room 491 Thursday, January 22, 2004 Room 407 Monday, January 26, 2004 Room 491 IAP December 12, 2003 - 8:20PM Practices will be Monday and Thursday at 9:00PM in either Room 407 or 491 of the Student Center. First practice is January 5. We're trying to figure out IAP performances. Currently we two performances lined up. The first is on Thursday, Jan. 22 from 3:30 to 5:00PM (+ travel) at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. It's a performance followed by a workshop. The second is the CSC New Years Banquet on Sunday, Feb. 15. There is a performance on Friday, Jan. 23 that we could potentially do. It's a weekday. It's at Dean College which is about 1 hour away taking the T and commuter rail (ie 2 hour round trip). We will probably perform sometime in the afternoon. (Rememeber this is the day after the other performance lined up.) We need to find out if we can at least have enough people interested and able to go for at least two lion routine (6 people plus a drummer). So email John if you think you can go or if you have an opinion about the situation. Two potential performances on Saturday, Feb. 7. One for a CSSA New Years celebration. OR a performance at Mt. Holyoke China Nite. The date for CSSA is tenative so we may be able to do both. Mt. Holyoke is 1.5 hours away (3 hour round trip) so if there isn't enough interest, we won't do that either. Again, email John if you can go or have some opinion about anything. Good luck on finals and have a great break! See you guys in January. Lion Dance Movies October 10, 2003 - 10:01PM Yay me. If you do a Google search for "lion dance movies" MIT Lion Dance is the number 1 link. Yeah, we rock. We outrank the Genting World Lion Dance Championship website that has insanely good videos of Lion Dancing. Any MIT students interested in lion dancing out there? Come to Night Market and meet club members. We'll be teaching some basic simple moves. In other news, Emily sent out a practice times list to everyone doing BITSA, tell her what times you can't go and she'll try to find the ones that everyone can make. Night Market October 1, 2003 - 10:40PM CSC and ATS are organizing a Night Market event for October 24th from about 7:00 to 10:00PM. We are planning to have booth where we tell people about lion dancing and show them some basic moves. It's a good recruiting opportunity. Email Emily if you can make it. Even if you can only make it for a little bit. You can look at the other booths and activities while you're there. In other news, Emily confimred that we could perform at BITSA. We'll have a few practices. If you have any preferences for days, email Emily about it. BITSA September 17, 2003 - 11:45PM Welcome back everyone! Lion Dance is starting up again. There was a FAP workshop about a month ago. We are trying to get a BITSA performance together. BITSA is going to be November 15th at Tufts. We need at least 7 people. If you can make it, email Emily. Tell her what are the best days for practicing. International Fair Performance April 25, 2003 - 1:30AM This is probably the last performance of the year. We are performaning at 2:50PM for International Fair. Try to meet at 2:00PM to 2:30PM at the CSC Library to get everything ready. Below is the line up and routine. Watch for announcements about Dumpling Night II.

People going to the performance must be there. The lineup and routine are below. Try to meet at the CSC library at 11:45AM on Friday. If you have class until 12:00 noon, try to get to the Student Center as fast as you can. The performance will occur at approximately 12:15PM after our venerable President Chuck Vest speaks.

Routine: Sniff Snap walk Rearing Regular walk (cross) SWITCH bow(with end thrust) drink sleep SWITCH 1/2 circle Smoke weed fight 1/2 circle round kick with rearing 1/2 circle ricebag lift SWITCH backroll eat drop kick lettuce exit Sign Up to Perform April 9, 2003 - 12:10AM Emily wants you to sign up for CSSA Culture Fair and IFair performances. John says, "They're during class time, but we don't want to be lame with the two lion routine after the crazy GoR act." Sean thinks, "If other people don't sign up, I might have to lift Emily again." You decide, "I'm going to email Emily right now and tell her I'm a cool lion dance participator person." Grains of Rice Review April 6, 2003 - 10:00PM Good job everyone that participated in the Grains of Rice performance. The routine worked out really well. I think the crowd really liked it. I hope Yuan's ankle gets better. The food was great and so were the other acts in the first part. Missed the second part but I'm sure they were great too. I'm really behind in putting up pictures, but I guarantee that they will be up eventually. So send them if you got them. GoR Line Up and Routine Update April 3, 2003 - 11:15PM The routine (three lion with stunts) has been updated. The line up is also up (see below). Everyone remember your positions. Final practice for Grains of Rice will probably be 11:00AM on Sunday. The performance will be at 7:00PM on Sunday.
Grains of Rice April 2, 2003 - 10:30PM Hope everyone had a good spring break. We are the opening act for Grains of Rice. So, we will be performing at 7:00PM on Sunday. Practicing earlier in the day, probably around 11AM. People performing are: Emily, Sean, Brian, Jacquie, Lauri, Vivian, Yuan, Pei-Hsin, Forrest, and John W. Everyone performing must attend practice on Thursday (April 3) at 9PM at the Student Center. If you want to perform, email Emily and attend the Thursday practice. In other news, Lauri, Pei-Hsin, and John W. worked out a three-lion routine with more stunts in it. View it here. You need MS Excel though. Stunt Practice March 16, 2003 - 8:30PM First, email Emily if you can go to either Grains of Rice, CSSA Culture Fair, or International Fair. For I-fair, say what times you are available so she can sign up for a time. There is a special stunt practice on Monday March 17th at 9:00PM. We will meet at the CSC Library on the 4th floor of the Student Center. Since we did not reserve space, we will probably use one of the exercise rooms in Dupont. Every lion dancer should be able to do several basic stunts like the ground roll and simple lifts. Then, people can practice specific stunts they want to learn. Like any stunts that other teams at the showcase that you think would be good for our routine. Good job to all those that went to the Showcase. All the teams were really good. I think we held our own and did a well. Showcase Lineup and Reminder March 13, 2003 - 3:30PM Reminder that there is practice tonight at 9:00 in the student center. The lineup is here (edited with final adjustments). Remember where you are switching. Everyone not taking the Harvard-Brandeis shuttle to the Showcase on Friday must meet at 4:15PM at the CSC Library. We will meet Sean and Emily who have the UHaul and get loaded by 4:45 so we can leave at 5:00. 20 minute ride to Brandeis and then stage practice at 5:30. Performances begin at 7:00. Afterparty at Brandeis after (yeah after) the showcase. Email Emily if you want to do the CSSA Culture Show performance at noon on Friday, April 18th.
Final Showcase Practice March 10, 2003 - 5:10AM The final practice for the showcase will be on Thursday, March 13 at 9:00PM in the Student Center, 4th floor. Everyone who is performing needs to be there. We will go through the entire routine with lion costumes. All stunts must be perfected at the beginning of practice or they will not be included. Everyone else, feel free to come and watch and practice stunts. The East Coast Intercollegiate Lion Dance Showcase is the March 14 at Brandeis, travel out (it's not too far) and see some great lion dancing. It's the first ever, so we'll be making history. See the links page about the National Freestyle Lion Dance Championships. Scoll down to the bottem of the Lion Dance section. Extra Practice March 6, 2003 - 1:40PM Tonight, there is practice for the showcase. 9:00PM in room 407 of the student center. There is an extra practice lined up on Saturday (March 8th) from 6:00-8:00PM in room 407 as well. Everyone performing should try to make all of the practices. If you want to perform and have not contacted Emily, do so soon. Everyone should take a look at the three lion routine from the CSC Banquet since it will be similar to the one we will use at the showcase. Showcase Info March 3, 2003 - 1:00AM Currently, two practices are lined up March 6 and March 13 before the intercollegiate showcase. Everyone who wants to perform should email Emily and go to both practices. Hopefully, we can get enough people to perform the three lion routine and not look bad compared to the awesome routines of the other troupes. Another issue is if we should have more practices. Grains of Rice will be April 6. ***************************************** The 1st East Coast Intercollegiate Lion Dance Showcase When: Friday, March 14, 2003 Where: Brandeis University, Levin Ballroom Time: 7:00PM Cost: $3 Donation The show will include lion dance troupes from: **Brandeis University** **Brown University** **Columbia University** **Massachusetts Institute of Technology** **Boston College** For Directions: http://www.brandeis.edu/overview/directions.html For More Information: wan@brandeis.edu HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! ***************************************** Practice time again February 27, 2003 - 3:40PM It's that time of week again. Practice time again. 9:00PM, 4th floor of the Student Center, kiddos. Probably a light practice and stunts practice. Practice/Pictures February 20, 2003 - 3:15AM There is practice today at 9:00PM in the 4th floor of the student center. I added a bunch of pictures from the CSC Banquet, Singapore Student Society, and Dumpling Night. If you have any pictures from any events, send them to me. I still need pictures from the Adoptive Families event and I know there's more from the CSC Banquet out there. If you want to see the "special" pictures from Dumpling Night, ask me for the link. Dumpling Night February 17 - 12:50PM Last night was Dumpling Night. It was great. Diana and John W. made some awesome batches of dumpling meat. Everyone did a good job making skins and wrapping (with "intersting" rolling pins). Good job with those "special" dumplings Forrest. The skin on some were "thick because the dough was too thick." Watched an awesome Jet Li movie about lion dancing called Invincible Shaolin. He played Wong Fei Hong, one of the greatest martial artists ever. He also is the developer of Hong Gar, the most dominant style of lion dancing today. The loud "games" in the back made it somewhat hard for people who hadn't seen the movie to hear. Good job to John K. for winning the "contest." Thanks for singing Happy Birthday to me everyone. If you have pictures and movies, send them to me. The two performances for yesterday went great, by the way. Practice Thursday at 9:00PM. Meet at the CSC Library. Busy Weekend February 14, 2003 - 11:18PM The last practice for the three lion routine before the Banquet is Saturday 2:00PM in Walker Memorial. Everyone should try to be there so we can make sure everyone knows what to do and make sure everyone knows the stage size. Dress nicely for the Banquet and bring the Lion Dance shirt, pants, and shoes that you can perform in to the Banquet. The Adoptive Families Performance is 3:00PM on Sunday in Walker Memorial. Meet for the performance at 2:30PM at the CSC Library. Later, Singapore Student Society New Year's Party Performance at 7:30PM in the Walker as well. After the performance, Dumpling Night. It will be in Burton 4. Bring "entertainment." Email Emily if you are going to the Sunday Events. The lineup for the CSC Banquet is (routine is here):
Three Lion Routine / Dumpling Night February 11, 2003 - 2:30AM MIT Lion Dance Dumpling Night will be the Sunday following the CSC Banquet, February 16. The following people will be assigned positions in the three lion routine for the CSC Banquet: George, John K., Sean, Lauri, Diana, Amy, Alice, Pacing, Forrest, Joseph, Kat, Vivian, Jeff, Sherry, Jacquie, John W., and Emily. Anyone else who wants to do it should email Emily and go to the Thursday practice. Everyone on the list should try to make Thursday practice at 9:00 in the Student Center. Three Lion Routine: (Can be seen practiced without lions for one of the first times. Also helpful, very only low resolution movie clips of tricks done by alumni.) SNIFF/WALK Darth Maul and Rainbow come in on opposite sides, walk to sides of the stage and crouch. GOLD INTRO Gold around in a circle sniff 3 times (faster at bottom, slower at top), and end with Alice-style cross-kick, D & R look in awe/bowing to G (or just look around). Walk into new position, D & R cross behind G (new drum beat). G acts cool until switch is complete. BOW Gold lion in the middle SWITCH DRINK D & R try to drink first at the same time (or don't get to drink) G (scares the other lions) steals the drink and flaunts toward both lions (timed/discrete D&R switch) FIGHT G vs. R smoking weed ("so good" = regular jump back, "for you" = freeze jump) G vs. D Alice-style fight kicks. Another half circle Ground roll G over R & D Fight lift D & R in same direction, G either runs in opposite direction or scroll lift in center of stage or fight lift without moving SLEEP (using slow fight drum) G on one side, R & D on the other WAKE UP normal SWITCH EAT (new beat) D & R throw candy. G throw lettuce in the middle (one lion eat lift) BACKROLL/WALK to scroll position ???????? SCROLLS D freeze jump G Alice-style lift (in the middle) R Yifung jump or two side lions do freeze jump while middle lion does 2-base lift. PLAY WITH CROWD EXIT Important: CSC Banquet February 9, 2003 - 5:00PM This is very important. The CSC Banquet is in one week. Almost everyone should be available for this performance. Email Emily if you can make it. There will be three practices this week: Monday and Thursday at 9:00PM at the Student Center and on Saturday before the Banquet. You don't need to go to all the practices to be in the performance. We will be practicing the three lion routine so it will be ready for the banquet. The Eastgate performance was great. We got food and red envelopes after. This is actually the proper way to thank a lion dance troupe traditionally. It was fun, a most of them were graduate students returning to do a little more studying, so they had little children who are always fun to play with. February 8, 2003 - 5:40PM Only one week left before the CSC banquet. Major practice is needed to get the three lion routine worked out and hopefully some cool stunts learned. Thus, there is practice on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday (before the banquet). This performance requires a lot of people, so everyone who can make it, email Emily. Remember, those performing get free tickets to to the banquet. Imporant: The Ashdown performance is no longer the Ashdown performance. It is actually going to be at Eastgate. The performance is at 2:00PM so we should probably meet at around 12:30 at the CSC library so we can practice for a while and take the equipment over to Eastgate, which is near Sloan. This is the line up [Modified due to time change and member availability]:
Ashdown Update and Practice February 5, 2003 - 10:00PM It appears that the Ashdown performance is a go. It will be Sunday, February 9 at 4:00PM. The following people are scheduled to go: Sean, Lauri, John W., Jacquie, Pacing, Forrest, and Vivian. So there will be practice Thursday, February 6 at 9:00PM. The people mentioned above should go. Everyone else should go too, since we need to practice the three lion routine. Also, room reservations were strange. So, we will be meeting at the CSC library. It's on the fourth floor of the Student Center for those who don't know. Book a Performance February 3, 2003 - 3:20AM Once again, John proves that he has a huge amount of time and made a page that allows people to request a performance. This is cool. People can now easily request performances. Now if we get really really good, we can raise fees from break even and perform year round to pay for the extremely expensive education we are getting. John Has No Life February 2, 2003 - 8:35PM Since John has no life and wants to be more prepared for when Emily and Sean push me out to give a speech, he read a bunch more about lion dance. So, he updated the about section with tons of information. I think this might be too much for little kids, but everyone should read it so they have an idea about what they are doing when they perform the dance. Pictures section is also changed. The pictures are smaller to save server space, if you want a high quality pic for some reason, email me. Misinformation February 1, 2003 - 7:50PM Reports of a MIT Lion Dance sighting at the Boston Conservatory were greatly exaggerated. Call for members willing to do the Ashdown House performance. The date is unclear but is believed to be Sunday, February 9th. If field operatives are unoccupied, contact Sean or John. Information on Monday practice is minimal as well. Agents: make frequent checks to maintain up-to-date information. In other news, dumpling night is most likely set as February 16. Some new links are up in relation to the Intercollegiate Lion Dance Showcase. Boston Conservatory Performance February 1, 2003 - 3:00AM First, Happy New Year everyone! For those going to the Boston Conservatory Performance today, there will be practice at 6PM to get all the switches correct and to go over all everything again. People going include: Jeff, John W., Emily, Brian, Lauri, and Forrest. If anyone else can go, that would be terrific. Meet at the CSC Library on the 4th floor of the Student Center at 6PM. (Note: Because of Sorority Rush, if anyone knows of somewhere we can practice, that would be cool.) The pictures of the performance at Brown Elementary are up. So go look at them. Lots of links January 30, 2003 - 2:36PM New links are up in the links section and information is up in the about. Read about the history of lion dancing and a bunch of other cool information about lion dancing. That way we can replace...help Emily when it comes to explaining lion dance. Check out this team that did the lion dancing that will be in Shanghai Knights. They were also the United Kingdom 2000 national champs in lion dancing. And maybe we could be in the Olympics if we practice enough. Everyone performing on Friday should be at practice today at 9:00PM at the Student Center room 407. That is Vivian, Sean,
Saturday still needs people. It is really close by: At the Boston Conservatory, just across the river. So far, these people are going: Forrest, Lauri, John W., Brian, Jeff, and Emily. If you can go and you are not on this list, email Emily. Need People January 29, 2003 - 4:15AM There are performances on Friday and Saturday this week. For Friday from 7-9AM, these people are going: Sean, John W., John K., Lauri, and Emily. For Saturday from 7-9PM, these people are going: Jeff, John W., and Emily. We really need people, especially for Saturday. So, if you can go, email Emily and let her know. Also, There is practice Thursday at 9:00PM in room 407 of the Student Center. The pictures from the Centre Elementary School performance are up. We got this email from Centre Elementary: Thank you so much ~ to you, and all the performers with the MIT Lion Dance Group ~ for your performance today at Centre School in Hampton. The children were awed, mesmorized, and delighted ~ and especially loved to crawl under the lion dance costume; beat on the drums; and learn some of the dance. Just awesome! And it was interestng to learn the different parts of the dance and see it with and without the lion dance costume. All the children were so excited when I returned to Mrs. Wentworth's class ~ and listening to them tell their stories of what they saw and experienced was wonderful. Fenn Pictures January 28, 2003 - 5:55PM The pictures from the Fenn Middle School performance are now up. The Centre Elementary School performance went well. Keep you schedules open for dumpling night, very open, since the time hasn't been set. Update January 28, 2003 - 1:00AM Lion dance website is finally updated after years of neglect. We already had one performance this year with the workshop at Penn School in Concord, MA last Friday. Information for today's performance: Location: Centre Elementary School, Hampton NH (1 hour drive) Performances: 10:15am and 12:30pm Meeting time: 8:15am (to get breakfast and load the van) People going: Emily, John K., John W., Sean, Vivian, Pon Pon We'll have our own van this time, so between performances we can drive around Hampton and find a diner to eat at (paid by lion dance). We got the following email from Fenn, this is what we do if for (well, that and free food, jk): Hi, You guys were great!! The kids really enjoyed you and you were so good to work with. THanks for all your flexibility. Sorry about the lunch thing, the mothers were worried there wasn't enough for the last lunch...actually they were worried about everything!!. So, in any case, good job and thanks for coming. Best, Amy Test Blog January 28, 2003 - 12:30AM Traditional start of all my blogs.
