MIT SEMINAR SERIES IN MANUFACTURING AND
PRODUCTIVITY
Place: Room 35-225 Time: 12:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 21, 2006
Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Director IESL
This talk will review the opportunities and challenges of creating the Internet of Things. The first generation of the Web allows the identification of documents so that they can be accessed using the familiar URL format: http://www.mit.edu/myapp/mydoc.html. The next generation will allow us to tie together documents that contain information about entities to the entities themselves. Thus, the detection of an entity using RFID can trigger events on the Web, such as the legal transfer of custody. A number of business applications, such as the tracking of beer kegs in the UK and anti-counterfeiting of drugs will be discussed.
