THE COLLECTION AND THE PROGRAM

The List Visual Arts Center maintains a collection of approximately 400 framed original prints and works on paper by leading contemporary artists which are made available to students for loan each September.

Each year about 15 new pieces are added to the collection to expand the breadth of the offerings. The previous year's purchases are exhibited in the Student Center (building W20, third floor), for one academic year, after which they are moved into the active collection for borrowing (thus, the 2006 purchases will be moved into the active collection in 2007).

Approximately 400 works are exhibited in the List Visual Arts Center for two weeks in the fall of each year. MIT students may stop in to view the works during this time and register their top three choices to borrow for the duration of the academic year in a random lottery. Impartial List Visual Arts Center staff will administer the lottery and post the results. Generally, we receive close to1000 entries, so entrants have about a 2 in 5 chance of receiving something. The lottery for academic year 2007-2008 will be held immediately following the exhibition, which runs from September 4 through 16, everyday 12-6pm.

Students who borrow artwork for the 2007-2008 year will be expected to return their borrowed works to the List Visual Arts Center offices, E15-109, during May 2008. A reminder email will be sent. If you leave MIT before the end of the year, you must return your artwork to the List Visual Arts Center offices. Loans are not transferable. Please contact registrar John Rexine, via email or phone (617) 253.6633, to make arrangements or if you have additional questions about your artwork.
