1995-1996 Season

1995-96 turned out to be a record breaking year for the MIT men's gymnastics team. The squad turned in its highest scores ever and in February was ranked in the top 20 in the country in all NCAA divisions. The teams 8-4 record was the best since the 1985-86 season when the Engineers were 7-1.

Two competitors led the way for the team through much of the season. Junior Rob Cooper was selected by his teammates as the team's most valuable performer. Cooper set a new MIT record in the all-around with a score of 48.85 in a February victory over the University of Vermont. He was selected as the eastern College Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week based on that performance.

Freshman Jason Miller also turned in a stellar season. Miller earned ECAC weekly honors by being selected Gymnastics Rookie of the Week. His 45.35 all-around score in a loss to Southern Connecticut (by a mere .25) was one of the highest scores ever for an MIT frosh.

Four Engineers were ranked in the USA National Statistics during the year.

As a team, the Engineers set Institute records when the top scores of four gymnasts were computed (189.95) and when the scores of the top five competitors were computed (231.30). The squad placed third in the New England Championships behind perrenial powers UMass-Amherst and Springfield College.
