Kerberos for Macintosh 4.0.3 Installer Customization Requirements & Tips

Overview

In general, you may modify the Kerberos for Macintosh 4.0.3 Classic Installer source to suit the needs of your site. All you need to do is place the binaries where the installer expects, replace the Kerberos Preferences and Read Me files (and possibly the Kerberos Library file), and rebuild the installer! However, there are a few elements which all installers must contain, and we have a few tips on customizing.

Requirements

• Your installer must display the "Kerberos License" file on startup (this file is included with the distribution).
• You should make it clear in either the read me or splash screen that your installer is a localized version of the installer, and not the MIT distributed installer. You should also limit distribution of your modified installer to your own local community as much as possible.
• You should not change the install locations of Kerberos for Macintosh files, simply because Kerberos for Macintosh will probably stop working if the files are installed in different locations.
• The KfM Installer Read Me is provided as a guideline for creating your own read me. If you use a modified form of the Read Me, be sure to remove all references to MIT support phone number and addresses - MIT's HelpDesk does not provide support for Kerberos users outside of the MIT community.

Tips

• Be sure to read the Getting Started section of the KfM 4.0.3 Classic Installer source documentation.
• Don't forget to update both the Kerberos Library and Kerberos Preferences file with appropriate realm configuration for your site before building the installer! For details about how to do this, see the Kerberos Preferences on Mac OS 8.x & 9.x Documentation.
• The Kerberos Preferences on Mac OS 8.x & 9.x Documentation also explains why there will be two Kerberos Preferences files on a working installation of KfM, and why the installer installs its one copy where it does.
• If your installer is going to support Mac OS versions earlier than Mac OS 8.6, you will need to install the Kerberos Library and Kerberos Support Library files in the Extensions folder instead of Application Support. See the Installer Notes section of the Installer Documentation for further information. (The MIT .vct as distributed handles these cases properly, so if you're using the MIT .vct you don't need to worry about this.)
