MACZEPHYR 1.3.3 READ ME -- December 7, 1999 (installer Rev 4) ======================= MacZephyr is a real-time messaging and notification system that runs on Ethernet or PPP dialup connections (such as Tether). It is used by MIT students, faculty, and staff for academic and personal communication with other MacZephyr users as well as Zephyr users on Athena and other platforms. See below for a complete list of new features, changes, and bug fixes in MacZephyr 1.3.3. MacZephyr 1.3.3 is a minor upgrade to MacZephyr 1.3.2. We recommend that you use version 1.3.3 instead of any previous versions. ------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ------------------- MacZephyr 1.3.3 requires a Macintosh with System 7 (or later), MacTCP 2.06 or Open Transport 1.1 (or later), and KClient 1.5 or later. While MacZephyr is not Open Transport-native, it is compatible with Open Transport versions 1.1 or later. ------------ INSTALLATION ------------ After reading these notes, click on "Continue". This will bring you to the main Installer screen. * Click on the "Install" button to perform an Easy Install. This will install the MacZephyr application and related read mes. --------- UPGRADING --------- If you are already using a previous version of MacZephyr, drag the newly installed copy of the MacZephyr application into the same folder as your current version of MacZephyr. That way, it will be able to find your subscription and anyone files automatically. You do not have to delete your old copy of MacZephyr. (In fact, until you establish that the new version is working properly, you should not delete it.) You will have to re-enter your preferences and reposition your windows in the new version of MacZephyr the first time you run it. We apologize for this inconvenience. ------------------------------ DOCUMENTATION AND GETTING HELP ------------------------------ Documentation and help for MacZephyr can be found on the MacZephyr Home Page: (This documentation may not reflect the most recent revisions to MacZephyr but should be close enough to get you started. Most other changes are covered by this Read Me.) After reading this entire read me file and the documentation, MIT users who still have questions about using or configuring MacZephyr can contact the MIT Computing Help Desk at x3-1101 or send e-mail to: mac-help@mit.edu If you believe you have found a bug in MacZephyr (although see the "Known Bugs" sections below) or have suggestions, send e-mail to: maczephyr@mit.edu ---- TIPS ---- * Here's a tip when using the "Notify Eudora about e-mail" option. If the dual notifications you receive from both MacZephyr and Eudora bother you, you can eliminate the MacZephyr messages without losing the feature of getting your mail as soon as it arrives. Simply use the "Filter" command to filter the same triplet you use for mail notification. For instance, if you're notified on (old-style), you should filter that. If you're notified on (new-style), you should filter that. You will never see the notifications in MacZephyr, but the AppleEvent still gets sent. (Conveniently, MacZephyr checks to see if it should send the AppleEvent before it checks to see if it should filter the triplet.) ----------------------------------- CHANGES/BUGS FIXED IN VERSION 1.3.3 ----------------------------------- * By default, "Notify Eudora about e-mail" is now triggered by triplets, that is, class MAIL, any instance, and your username. (In previous versions the trigger was .) This change is to accommodate upcoming changes to the MIT mail servers. You still need to subscribe to the mail triplet for this option to take effect. * If you are currently subscribed to , you should change your subscription to for future compatibility. * Limited support for random signatures. See "MacZephyr Extras Read Me" file installed in the MacZephyr folder. * Macintosh carriage returns in signatures are now properly converted to Unix carriage returns when messages are sent. * Outgoing zephyr log properly displays carriage returns in signatures and strips formatting commands from signatures. * You can now send zephyrs to classes with spaces in their names. * Timeout when sending a zephyr has been reduced from 10 seconds to 4 seconds. MacZephyr tries to send a message 3 times, so this is now 3 x 4 seconds instead of 3 x 10 seconds. This should improve MacZephyr's responsiveness to command-period when sending messages. You can change this value, see the "MacZephyr Extras Read Me" file. * MacZephyr no longer calls the TestTrack library on startup. ---------------- PREVIOUS CHANGES ---------------- For a list of new features and fixes that appeared in previous releases of MacZephyr since version 1.1, see the "Detailed MZ Version History" file that was installed in the MacZephyr application folder. ----------------- KNOWN BUGS/ISSUES ----------------- * MacZephyr's preferences are still stored inside the application, thus, MacZephyr modifies itself when saving the preferences. This makes using MacZephyr on servers difficult. * MacZephyr may lose your subscriptions (and your location) if another application hogs processor time (screensavers in particular can be guilty of this). If this happens, you can resubscribe and reset your location by using the menu commands "Resend Subs to Server" and "Set Exposure..." * Older versions of the extension "Adobe Type Reunion" may cause MacZephyr operations to take twice as long as normal (especially noticeable with znol). The solution is to upgrade to the most recent version of Adobe Type Reunion (2.0 or later), which do not cause this problem. * MacZephyr may crash when receiving extremely large messages (greater than 45K). * Occasionally you may receive and "internal error when subscribing" right after you've renewed your Kerberos tickets and MacZephyr tries to reload your subs. This is not serious; if it happens just choose "Resend Subs to Server" from the "Control" menu. * MacZephyr may not work if you have single-link multihoming turned on under Open Transport 1.3. (Since this option is meant for use by dedicated servers, not clients, this isn't serious.) * MacZephyr probably will not work behind a NAT (a computer providing IP masquerading). * Occasionally, users may receive a "Cannot find a hostname for this machine" error when starting up even though the machine they are working on does have a hostname. Make sure that you have the latest version of MacTCP (version 2.0.6 as of when this was written) or Open Transport (1.1.2) and verify that you are using the correct domain name servers (call the MIT Computing Help Desk for these). Otherwise, report the error number listed in the dialog to maczephyr@mit.edu . --Information Systems December 7, 1999 --------------------------------------- MacZephyr License Agreement & Copyright --------------------------------------- Project Athena, Athena Dashboard, Athena MUSE, Kerberos, X Window System, TechInfo, Zephyr and MacZephyr are trademarks of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
