A bandsaw is the general-purpose cutting machine. It's good for making straight cuts, and can cut curves up to about a 3 inches radius when used with the proper blade. The cut you'll get with the bandsaw won't be as accurate as what you can get with other machines in the shop, but it's good enough for most jobs. And this normally isn't a problem because a bandsaw cut is nearly always followed by another machine. The edge after the cut will be rough and will nearly always need to be sanded down. If your piece is left a little too long, the extra material can easily be taken off by a sanding machine, and for this reason it is often a good idea to cut your piece a little longer than you want it. If you cut your piece to the size you want it and then sand it down, you might end up with a piece that is too small. |
