Johnson Tan

Biography

My name is Johnson Tan. I was born in Singapore but lived a significant portion of my life in Maine, USA. I am in the fifth year of a 5-year combined Masters/Bachelors program in EE.

My interests lie in modeling and analyzing manufacturing systems. After I graduate, I plan to go to Qing Hua University in Beijing, China during the summer and then to Japan for a year continuing my research interests.

Research Topic

The complexity and variability of the IC manufacturing environment make it difficult to produce a production schedule that optimally utilizes the plant's capacity without leading to excessive production times and inventory.

To aid production schedulers in their capacity planning, a machine utilization analysis tool will be developed. This tool will give schedulers an idea of the load imposed on machines by the different release schedules they create, as well as alert them of any potential capacity problems. A linear programming approach is taken.
