Michael H. Veatch

Michael H. Veatch received a B.A. in mathematics from Whitman College and a M.S. in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received a Ph.D. in operations research from MIT in 1992 and is now an associate professor of mathematics at Gordon College in Wenham, MA. Prior to his academic appointment he spent seven years in industry at The Analytic Sciences Corp., studying Air Force supply and repair systems and other defense issues. His Ph.D. work focused on make-to-stock production systems and the mathematical control problems associated with them. He received an honorable mention in the 1993 Nicholson student paper competition from the Operations Research Society of America for this work.

Dr. Veatch continues to do basic research on scheduling and control problems for manufacturing systems. In the summer of 1994 he was a visiting scientist at MIT and Boston University studying optimal control policies for multi-product unreliable manufacturing systems. More recently, he spent a semester at AT&T's plant in North Andover, MA assisting in the design of a new high-speed line and the development of new work-in-process inventory procedures to achieve rapid production. He is also investigating optimal inspection procedures and other quality/cost interactions as part of the Leaders for Manufacturing research program. Dr. Veatch has written eight articles appearing in Operations Research and other journals.
