Mrs. Curtis was not a church-going woman. She believed that God talked to everyone, but most people did not bother to listen. Mrs. Curtis did not like the idea that she might not hear God talking to her. She set up a system to make sure it did not happen.
Every morning, just as she woke up, she went to the Bible. She picked up her Bible in one hand and her brooch with the green glass emeralds in the other. She closed her eyes and let the Bible fall open on the table. Then she stabbed down with her pin onto a page. God guided the pin and the book such that the passage she picked would be her guidance for the day.
This morning the Bible had said:
But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.Exodus 21:24
Mrs. Curtis knew her time had come.
