Blue and White Polka-Dotted Dress


Mrs. Curtis was always fond of blue and white polka-dots. Miriam could not wear sharp patterns like that when she was a girl. Her mother feared that they would stain too easily. When Miriam was a bit older, she made a point of wearing such clothes every chance she had, especially in blue and white. Miriam thought those two colors looked elegant together, and Mrs. Curtis agreed.

In fact, Miriam was wearing a blue and white polka-dotted dress when she met Henry. It was in a canteen in Piccadilly. The room was full of American soldiers and Henry was one of them. He had asked her to dance. Miriam had not particularly wanted to, but he smiled and was insistent.

So she did.

After the dance, Henry wanted to walk her home. Miriam thought that was silly, as it was quite far away. Henry said with a smile that he would walk her home whether she wanted him to or not, so it would be best if she let him.

So she did.

The relationship between the two of them never changed, except, perhaps, that he smiled less as time went on...
