Prize-Wining Lilies

Miriam had always wanted a flower garden.

She had often grown vegtables, but to grow something as useless as flowers was too decadent. Her parents never would let her. They said that the vegetables flowered, and that should be enough for her. It was not.

As Mrs. Curtis buried Mr. Curtis in the back yard, she wondered what exactly she would do. To have him go missing and have a patch of newly-turned earth appear in her back yard on the same day without explanation would not be over-looked. She finally decided to grow a garden. Such fertilizer should not go to waste.

Mrs. Curtis wondered what she would grow. She considered roses, tulips, and forget-me-nots, but finally decided on Easter lilies. Lilies were the flowers of death and Easter is the time of resurrection. She would grow them for Mr. Curtis.

For herself.

For Miriam.
