Yuri's Night Worldwide

Forty years ago on April 12th, 1961, Yuri Gagarin blasted off in Vostok 1 on a mission that would change the world. This first human flight into space opened the world to a new and challenging frontier.

Exactly twenty years later to the day on April 12th, 1981, John Young and Robert Crippen flew the first Space Shuttle into orbit, establishing a new era of reusable space transportation.

To commemorate this milestone, Yuri’s Space Night – a grassroots, 24-hour celebration connecting space, science and music – will be observed with more than 64 events in 29 countries.
