The Guastavino Project in the Department of
Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology is dedicated to documenting the works
of the Guastavino Company in the Boston area. In
the late 19th and early 20th century, Rafael
Guastavino Moreno and his son Rafael Guastavino
Esposito were responsible for nearly a thousand
buildings in North America, and this project
documents the extant and demolished works in the
Boston area. The 65 buildings identified thus
far include such significant projects as the
Boston Public Library and the Guastavino Company
tile factory in Woburn, Massachusetts.
The intent of this project is not to replace
other existing sources but to provide digital
references and a comprehensive catalog of
Guastavino projects in the Boston area.
