I thought I was asleep in my old bunk on the Night Lady. I could feel the subtle sway of the ship beneath me, could smell the salt in the air, and could hear the yelling of sailors outside the ship. Da must have pulled into port while I was asleep, I thought. I pulled the blanket up around me without opening my eyes. My bunk seemed unusually comfortable. It was that thought that triggered my memory, and I remembered falling asleep behind some crates aboard the Darkwind. I was obviously no longer behind those crates. I stiffened and tried not to open my eyes, not wanting to give myself away, silently wishing I had some magic powers to make myself disappear. "I know you're awake," came a soft girl's voice, not the rough pirate's I had been expecting. I opened an eye. "Who are you?" I asked in my roughest voice, trying to pretend I was the one who belonged here and she was the stranger. It was a tactic that had worked well for Da. The girl only smiled and laughed softly. "My name is Mer, and you are aboard the Darkwind. You are safe here, don't worry." I looked at her suspiciously. How could any kid be safe in the Dragon's Tooth? J.
