        The sun was setting, and most of the street vendors had already =
packed up their wares, and gone to their sleeping places for the =
evening.  Myce had dropped off her purchases at the DarkWind, and =
was winding her way down Rampaige street, looking for a way to =
fulfill her promise to Merwin. Finally, she spied a faint light =
coming from a tiny shop window.   Painted in faded letters, upon =
the rippled glass  _J. Thornwhires Esq. Bookseller_. =20

        "This looks like the place, Tolstoy.  Wait here for me, we don't =
want to scare Mr. Thornwhires to death."  Myce Elf hopped down =
from the back of the giant golden beast, and entered the =
establisment of J. Thornwhires, Esq. =20

        As soon as she opened the door, Myce knew that this was a special =
place.  Books were everywhere, in shelves, on the floor, piled up =
in stacks holding up the ceiling.  A filter of dust shone in the =
flickering gaslight lamps, and the air of a well loved bookstore =
settled around Myce.  She smiled in satisfaction, and began to =
search the stacks for the owner.   Eventually, she found a little =
man, about two feet high, dusting one of the shorter piles of =
books. =20

        "Oh, there you are!  I've stayed open late just for you. "  the =
little man pattered. He pushed his small wire-rimmed glasses up =
from the end of his nose.  A hank of hair fell into his eyes.  =
"Here's what you are looking for. "  he said, as he handed Myce a =
dust covered book entitled _Magic for Beginners_.  The gold =
letters glimmered faintly as Myce brushed the dust off of the =
tome.  "No fee," he continued, " However, you must allow me to =
book passage on the DarkWind. "  The little man combed the thick =
mass of brown hair off of his face with his fingers.  "I won't be =
any trouble, none at all."  His wide brown eyes blinked. =20

        Myce was speechless.  She took the book, nodded her head dumbly, =
and stared in awe at the little man.  She hadn't seen anyone near =
her size, since she had entered Dysmal Keep, and this man was drop =
dead gorgeous.

        The man gallantly took Myce's hand.  "Jacob Thornwhires at your =
service ma'am."
He bowed and kissed her hand.  "I will board the DarkWind this =
evening.  We depart in the morning, n'est pas?"

        Still dumbstruck Myce nodded her head once more.   She picked up =
few other books, her mind reeling.   She handed Jacob a gold piece =
for the books, but he shook his head -- refusing her payment.  =
Myce then left the store, silently climbed up on the lion's back, =
and headed towards the DarkWind.

        A few minutes later, the lights went out in the bookstore.  Jacob =
Thornwhires, exited the store, wearing a black cloak and a top =
hat.  He set down his carpet bag, and locked the door securely.   =
He hung a small sign on the door handle - picked up his bag and =
hurried down the street in the direction of the docks.   In =
careful script, the sign read:=20

        Gone Adventuring.
