"What are you going to do to me?" I finally asked, the silence torture. "What do you mean?" she asked, an eyebrow arching. "Are you going to take me back to the slave block?" I asked defensively, "because if you are I'm not going without a fight." I jumped down from the bunk and to assume my best "en garde" position, but found that my dagger was gone. "Oh, man!" I thought to myself. "What have I gotten myself into?" Mer suddenly laughed. "I told you not to worry - you haven't gotten yourself into anything. This ship is run by kids just like us, and no one is going to sell you to the slave block. If you want to stay though, you have to earn your keep. Myce Elf is looking to bring on a few more crew members if you'd like to talk with her when she returns." I just stared at her in response. It was like she had read my mind or something. It took me a minute to figure out what she was saying. I was still suspicious, but I figured I didn't have many better choices, so I nodded. "All right, then," Mer said. "You can stay in here until she returns. If you are coming from the slave block people might be looking for you. You should stay below deck until we leave the Dragon's Tooth. Is that okay?" I nodded again. Because she seemed so nice, I managed a "Thank you." before she left. When I was alone I went to look out the porthole thinking how good it would be to be back at sea.
