Subject: INTRO: Audrey Friedman I am Audrey Friedman, a 46 year old wife and mother of two daughters. My kids are 19 and 22 years old. I am a teacher who has recently made a move (a BIG move) from teaching eighth grade English to third grade. I love it. Seeing children learn to become indepentent readers, writers and thinkers is so exciting. My passion for writing is a very strong factor in the classroom, and my students believe that they are serious writers too. I took a course four years ago to become a more effective teacher of writing. This was a month long institute (a site of the National Writing Project which originated at the University of California at Berkley) at Rhode Island College. A surprising thing happened. I found out that I was a writer. Always an avid reader, I never doubted my abilities there, but since a teacher in the sixth grade red-inked a poem of mine, I didn't write one again until that summer. I've been writing ever since, more prolofically during vacations. I have had two poems accepted for publication this year, one in the California Quarterly (California State Poetry Society), and one in the New England Council of Teachers of English literary journal called "The Leaflet". I live in East Greenwich, Rhode Island with my husband and daughters. I am a native New Yorker, from Brooklyn. I was involved in this list for about two weeks during the school year and couldn't deal with the volume of mail, but now I have more time, and also have learned to select topics. I'm looking forward to knowing you all. Audrey FRIEDMAN@IDS.NET
