Date:         Sun, 23 Aug 1998 14:49:38 PDT From: Enrique Barrera Subject:      [WRITERS] A BIO NEEDING A CRIT "About the artist, 'RosaS' Sheila Barrera and Her Art." She was born in the mid-1950s, upstate New York, went to the usual grammar school, high school and eventually graduated from Pratt Institute [nee: Sheila Orick] in 1977 with a bachelor of fine arts in sculpture. Her grandmother, Onna Orick, had taught her much about painting during her very early years, thus when her health problems with Lyme Disease prevented her from working further in sculpting, she returned to painting. Unfortunately, even the heavy fumes from oil paints prevent her from enjoying that, her favorite paint media, thus most of her present works are watercolor, acrylic or computer art. She married Enrique in 1982 and they do at times collaborate upon works of art together, mostly poetry and photography. RosaSheila's main inspirations have been upon the more curious of things in life or the spiritual in nature. Her lake legend paintings about the "lake monsters" of the world would be a good example of this. Then sometimes just the pure vibrant beauty of mother nature itself enamors her and she expresses that love simply within the realms of realism. She has always had a passion for the trees, she and her husband both dedicating one of their web sites to THE TREES. Then occasionally, she touches upon the almost surreal.... She strongly believes in the right of every person to own original art and so she does try to create works of art in all price ranges; these span all the way from large paintings on canvas created in her studio, to postcard sized watercolors painted on location and anything in-between. The artist currently lives with her husband and their dog on the Gulf Coast of Florida and has lived in New York City and New Jersey previously. She traveled extensively, before her illness... now being more of a homebody. Her nickname "RosaS" probably stems from her love of those flowers, just as much as that her husband often calls her by the name Rosa (then quickly by "Sheila" realizing his momentary confusion) and since it's a name common to several members of his family including his mother, this is not surprising. Please visit their web sites, if you would like to see more images of her/their artworks (some sold previously), poetry, computer art and photography... -- THE BARRERAS @ http://home.earthlink.net/~thebarreras http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/2365 http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9899 PS.
