Um...I'll stake the claim that it does work.  (assuming I've
understood what "it" is -- I'm thinking of the rather complex linkage
of freedom/liberty with self-sacrifice...summed up by one old thinker
as roughly "he who would gain his life, must give it away.")

I'll also point out that the lesson(s) and their applications must be
constantly relearned -- in each generation, by each individual, and
day-after-day, even minute-by-minute.

These are not the simple kind of problem where one learns to flip the
switch (or look at it the right way) and never has to struggle again.

These are the hard problems whose answers are lived.

And perhaps humanity is the resolution of the problem...for eternity.
