In particular, what would it mean for you to be successful as a
writer?

(some options that spring to mind--
        - money?
        - adulation of the literati
        - number of titles printed?
        - having a friend read it and say "I see what you mean"
        - having a stranger read it and write, saying "..." (well,
what do they write?)
        - what else?

Success?  Fame, Fortune, and...
