Date: Mon, 3 Nov 1997 08:17:13 MST From: Robyn Meta Herrington Subject: ALL: WINNERS: Halloween '97 (The Square, unusually quiet for these last few months, is a-buzz with activity. The Gathered Crowd is there in its finery: feathers and sequins, faux-fur and satin, all dressed in splendid excess. They have been patient. They have been quiet. But now, their wait is at an end. From the back of the square comes the sound of metal dragging on cobblestone. Robyn comes forth (dressed, in case you want to know, as a saucy gypsy: burgundy skirt, cream-coloured top, with a sequined wrap tied over one hip. No, not normal gypsy garb, but this *is* a special occasion... She brings Ye Olde Soap Box to the center of The Square, climbs on top and. . .) Greetings and Salutations, Lords and Ladies, Writers All: Nice to see you all here on this unseasonably warm November day. Thank you for your patience while I tallied the votes. (The Gathered Crowd looks on expectantly as she waves a fistful of envelopes at them.) But before I get to who won what, I have a few things to say: This year, the entries were all of good quality. Some were dazzling, and you have cast your vote and chosen the five that you thought were Most Worthy. I am pleased to have been Patron Saint of the Writers Halloween Contest for yet another year. I will say that only a few people have critiqued the stories. Once I have made the authors known, I invite *everyone* to critique to the list. Remember, it's not enough to write. We have to hone our other skills, and critiquing is an invaluable one to have. (The Gathered Crowd is growing restless. Robyn notices that a small bonfire is being built at the far end of The Square, and sees herself, in effigy, being tied to a stake...)
