>>> Item number 8312 from WRITERS LOG9302C --- (23 records) ------ <<< Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1993 11:12:13 JST Reply-To: WRITERS Sender: WRITERS From: Mike Barker Subject: Word of the Day Hepburn: mansun pronounced: man-show-n also written mansion (bet you think you know that word, don't you?) The first purchased home for most Japanese is a mansion, and many people live their whole life in one. Not what you thought Japanese housing was like? Hold on. A mansion here is what you would call a condominium - an "apartment" which is purchased instead of rented. Don't be too surprised if a Japanese visitor isn't really interested in seeing a mansion - he may live in one at home. Derivation: no real notion - although I'm suspicious that the real estate dealers had something to do with it. -----------------------------------------------
