Dog Love


My hair has grown long
over my eyes--my thoughts,
like my pet Shih-Tzus',
furred over but transparent
in the way my head tilts
slightly to the left
and my attentive sitting-up
(the trainers call it begging,
but we good dogs know better)
and in the eager quivering
of my hindquarters.

What you don't know is whether
I mean to jump, to chase,
to wrestle or to settle
my gentle head quietly
in your lap.
