They each had their dreams of how the wedding night would be. When the moment finally came complete happiness would unfold. The moment did come. Their pulses seemed to race from the excitement of the day, but this was not the cause of such pressure. The woman and man trembled with fear. They sat on the huge bed, hand-in-hand, with perspiration soaking into their wedding day garments. The woman faced her man and asked, "What do we do now?" The man crumpled before her. The pressure bore into him, inflaming his weakness. His eyes glazed over and he shook his head without a clue. Seeing the sharpness of despair in her man, the woman wept also. Then she set her strong arms around the man and began to rock with him. The motion began with the deep struggle in them both. Each person was unsure of where this powerfully uniting act was going to take them. The innocence was dying by the moment. Self-fulfillment beckoned like a river cresting to its levees. They could not help wondering whether the river would be held. The woman whispered in the man's ear, "God will help us. God will guide us. All three of us, alone tonight." The rocking found it's foundation. ------------------------------------------- "Yesterday they said today was tomorrow, but today they know better." --Poul Anderson, _The Visitor_ Michelle winebird@inreach.com
