This is both the simplest and the most effective aid to editing that I
know.

Read it out loud.

When you run out of breath, can't figure out which way the sentence
went, need to pause, stumble over the words, lose the points in the
bramble - you need to fix it.

If you don't do this already, try it.  You may like it.
