![]() You have all been given an Athena account and an Athena locker, when you are given an Athena account you are given space on MIT Mail servers for your email, space on MIT web space, and file storage on Athena. Go here to learn more about Athena!
![]() Where is Athena? By now you've probably noticed the computer clusters around campus. Location of Clusters and printers Location of quickstations [ top ] ![]() Basic Athena Commands
[ top ] ![]() Athena Software Full list You can find these through the program menu on the bottom left corner of your screen. You can also type commands at the athena prompt to open them. Some of my favorites: Firefox-Web browser (Orange blue globe on the menu bar) Gaim-Instant Messaging (Type add im;gaim at the athena prompt) Pine-Email (Type pine at the athena prompt) OpenOffice-Word Processing (Type ooffice at the athena prompt) Owl-Zephyr Instant Messaging (Type add ktools;owl at the athena prompt) To connect to your locker and other lockers (clubs, organizations, and other groups) you need to connect to Athena, many of the computers in the clusters have Athena (an operating system based off of unix) already on them. [ top ] ![]() Instant Messaging Zephyr-the world's first im service!!! Useful commands zwrite username (send them a zephyr!!!) zlocate username (see if a user is signed on) If you want a more user friendly interface, then type at the athena prompt: add ktools;owl. First thing I would recommend doing in owl is typing h to learn about owl's many features. MIT is deploying its own Jabber server with accounts linked to kerberos usernames. [ top ] ![]() Connecting to Athena from your Computer To connect to your locker and other lockers (clubs, organizations, and other groups) you need to connect to Athena, many of the computers in the clusters have Athena (an operating system based off of unix) already on them. However, there are ways to connect to Athena if you are not an Athena computer, such as: Windows OS SecureCRT (available at web.mit.edu/software) In a web browser go to athena.dialup.mit.edu Putty (fhttp://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/) Mac OS/Linux Using a terminal application ssh into athena (at the prompt type ssh username@athena.dialup.mit.edu) In a web browser go to athena.dialup.mit.edu For file transfers between your athena locker and local computer use the following programs: Windows OS SecureFX Go to web.mit.edu/software Macintosh OS Fetch (available at web.mit.edu/software, MUST INSTALL KERBEROS EXTRAS BEFORE ) [ top ] |
