FACT SHEET:
Purpose and Criteria
The Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience is an annual award of US $50,000 plus an inscribed gift presented to the recipient, to recognize an outstanding discovery or significant advance in the field of neuroscience. The prize recipient will present a public lecture at MIT, hosted by the McGovern Institute and followed by an award’s dinner. Criteria for selecting prize recipients are determined solely by the Selection Committee.
Nominating Procedures
Self-nomination is not allowed. Candidates for the award are to be nominated by individuals affiliated with universities, hospitals, medical schools and research institutes with a background in neuroscience. Each nomination should include a) a biosketch of the nominee, b) a letter of nomination (which includes a summary and analysis of the major contributions of the nominee to the field of neuroscience (not to exceed 5 pages). In addition, up to two supporting letters of recommendation and a maximum of two representative reprints will be accepted. Each nomination letter should include a short citation of the candidate’s major contribution to neuroscience.
Deadline
The nomination and supporting documentation must be received no later than October 31st of each year.
Selection Procedure
Recipient(s) are chosen by majority vote of the Selection Committee. Members of the selection committee and faculty affiliated with MIT are not eligible. Announcement of the award recipient will be made in February.
