Research summary: My project is to develop a physiologically relevant 3D human neural cell culture model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with a neuromuscular unit (blood brain barrier, BBB) in a microfluidic system (3D AD-BBB model). With the 3D AD-BBB model, I have focused on investigating the mechanisms of BBB breakdown and the role of BBB function in AD pathogenesis. My future plan is to evaluate the BBB penetration of AD drug targets in the 3D AD-BBB model and study whether BBB integrity enhancers can ameliorate AD pathogenesis.
