How-To Guide

As a member of the MIT community, you and your family have access to more than 25 medical services and specialties at MIT Medical centers in Cambridge and Lexington.

Most of our clinical services are available free of charge to registered students enrolled in the MIT Student Medical Plan, affiliates enrolled in the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan, and employees enrolled in the Traditional and Flexible MIT Health Plans, including those who work at Lincoln Laboratory, Draper Laboratory, and the Whitehead Institute.

Even if you're not covered by one of our health plans, you may be able to take advantage of our services. You can review your health insurance to see if it covers treatment at MIT Medical, or pay us at the time of your visit.

For information about your eligibility for MIT Medical services, please call our Billing Office at 617-258-5336.

Employee Primary Care Benefit
All benefits-eligible employees of MIT, Draper Laboratory, and the Whitehead Institute are eligible, free of charge, for the following short-term services under MIT Medical's Primary Care Benefit:

  • Short problem-related visits to an Internal Medicine physician or nurse practitioner, including after-hours visits
  • Short problem-related visits to a general surgeon
  • Short problem-related visits to an MIT Medical social worker, psychiatrist, or psychologist

Treatments, lab tests, health screenings, and other services required beyond the initial consultation are not covered by the Primary Care Benefit.

To find out if you're eligible, please call the Billing Office at 617-253-4372.

Your Personal Physician
To receive the best possible medical care from MIT Medical, we encourage all Health Plan members to choose a personal physician — your first point of contact for a medical need. Sometimes called a primary care doctor, your personal physician can coordinate your health care, perform routine physical exams, and help you decide on the most appropriate services or course of treatment. While this is optional for students, all employees and their dependents must pick a personal physician when you enroll in the Traditional or Flexible Health Plans.

Enrollment Guidance
Our Health Plans Office, 617-253-4371, can help you understand the enrollment procedures for MIT Medical health plans.

Translation Services
With advance notice, we can usually arrange for foreign language or sign language interpreters at our Cambridge and Lexington centers. Some of our physicians and nurse practitioners speak other languages, and all have access to the Language Line telephone translation service.

If either you or a friend needs language support, please tell us when you make an appointment.
