Employee Health Plans

Overview

An MIT Health Plan may be the best insurance you can choose for yourself and your family. The convenience of our medical services, the quality of our physicians, our affiliation with top hospitals in the Boston area, and reasonable referral requirements are only a few of our health plan advantages.

If you’re a benefits-eligible employee of MIT Cambridge, Lincoln Laboratory, the Whitehead Institute, or Draper Laboratory, we invite you to learn more about our available coverage. Retirees under age 65 may be eligible to continue with the same benefits they had while actively working. Speak with your benefits office to determine your coverage eligibility.

Traditional MIT Health Plan: Provides access to a full range of preventive and diagnostic services. Nearly all services are covered in full when provided or directed by your MIT primary care provider, including routine physical exams, treatment of illness and injuries, round-the-clock emergency care, and inpatient care at MIT Medical’s inpatient unit or an affiliated hospital. The plan is administered in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA).

Flexible MIT Health Plan (not available to Draper employees): Allows you the freedom to choose where you receive your health care. When your MIT primary care provider supervises your medical care, nearly all services are covered in full, as under the Traditional Plan. In addition, the Flexible Plan provides access to almost any hospital or physician outside the MIT network of affiliated providers without a referral (subject to deductible and coinsurance requirements). The plan is administered in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA).

Kwajalein Option: Employees working on the Kwajalein Atoll can receive specially designed benefits under the Kwajalein Option. With this option, medical services on the Kwajalein Atoll are covered as if they were provided at MIT Medical. Upon return to the United States, coverage reverts to the benefits, deductible, and copayment coverage provided by the regular Flexible MIT Health Plan.
