Health Insurance

What health insurance plans are available to MIT Students?
The MIT Student Health Plan is available to all registered MIT students. It consists of two parts, the MIT Student Medical Plan and the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan.

The MIT Student Medical Plan covers a wide range of services provided at MIT Medical, including primary care, many medical specialties, 24-hour urgent care, mental health care, and other services. Enrollment: Registered MIT students are automatically enrolled in the MIT Student Medical Plan as part of their tuition.

The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan covers inpatient hospitalization, including the birth of a child, inpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment, surgical procedures, prescription drugs, and other benefits. Enrollment: Since some type of hospital coverage is mandatory under Massachusetts law, regular, registered MIT students, and special students taking more than 27 units are automatically enrolled in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan and billed for the cost. We will cancel coverage and remove any charges for students who show proof of comparable insurance and complete a waiver form.

What are the Health Insurance Requirements for all MIT students?
All students must have hospital insurance coverage that meets the requirements of the Massachusetts Qualified Student Health Insurance Plan (QSHIP). Regular, registered MIT students, special students taking more than 27 units, and all students on J1 or F1 visas, are automatically enrolled in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan and billed for the cost. Students who have hospital insurance coverage that meets Massachusetts requirements can ask to waive mandatory enrollment in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan. Waiving enrollment in the MIT Student Extended Insurance plan will not waive your ability to access free services at MIT Medical available through the MIT Student Medical Plan.

What are the health insurance requirements for International students?
The United States Information Agency (USIA), which administers the Exchange Visitor Program requires that all students with MIT visa sponsorship and their dependents have adequate health insurance that continues for the entire period of their stay in the United States . Massachusetts law requires international students to have hospital insurance that meets specified minimum standards. Since the MIT Student Health Plan meets these Massachusetts standards, all regular registered international students, as well as international students registered as special students taking 27 or more units, are automatically enrolled in both the MIT Student Medical Plan and the MIT Student extended Insurance Plan. More information may be found at http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-international.html.

How do I waive the Student Extended Insurance Plan?
Online Waiver: Students who have comparable hospital insurance can ask to waive mandatory enrollment in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan. For fall term, waivers must be submitted no later than September 30. For spring term, waivers must be submitted no later than February 28. More information about waiving the Student Extended Insurance Plan may be found at http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-waiver.html.

How do I purchase medical coverage for my family?
Students can also purchase medical coverage for family members through the MIT Student Health Plan. Family members include a spouse, spousal equivalent partner, unmarried dependent children under 25 years of age, and dependent children of covered, unmarried dependents. Information about enrolling family members may be found at http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-family.html.

What are the costs for the MIT Health Plan?
Health Plan rates may be found at http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-rates.html For graduate students who are research or teaching assistants, in 2004/2005 $1440 of the rate will be paid by research grants or the relevant department.

How do I select a primary care clinician?
One key to staying healthy is to have a primary care clinician who knows you and whom you trust. Current information on each of the MIT Medical clinicians who are accepting new patients may be found at http://web.mit.edu/medical/g-choosing.html
