& Friends Dating And Silent Auction
Thursday April 20, 2006
7:30 PM
No. 6

On Thursday night (April 20th), MIT Medlinks
and friends held their 2nd annual dating and silent auction to raise money
for the Antimony L. Gerhardt Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics. Antimony
was a graduate student at MIT studying Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science and a long-time, dedicated MedLink. She passed away, unexpectedly
in November 2005 due to injuries suffered following an accident at the
young age of 24. The event raised close to $1000.00.
Students and other members of the MIT community
met at 7:30 at No. 6 for snacks, jokes, and silent bidding. The silent
auction included such donated items as a yoga class for six, a CPR class
for six, a custom-made handbag, clothes from Sanchez Circuit, Student
EMS baseball hats and baked goods.
At 8:30 sharp, the second half of the evening
began, featuring the less-traditional but immensely entertaining dating
auction. Medlinks and friends promised a date with themselves to the highest
bidder. According to audience members, the auctioneer Julie did a "wonderful
job" of soliciting competitive bids from the audience. Just in case
reading funny descriptions of a person weren't enough to embarrass him/her,
she added her own personal stories to cinch the highest bid possible.
The most expensive date of the night came to $60. Dates included tickets
to CAKE, dinners at Applebees, Asgard, Bertucci's, Mr Bartleys burgers,
Border Cafe, Au Bon Pain, Pourhouse Pub, Tea for Two at Upstairs on the
Square, coffee and/or dessert at Coffeehouse 1369, Toscis and outings
to the movies.
