Mac miscellany
For the last few years I have begun using Macs and particularly appreciate the well-developed command line interface with Terminal. Ultimately, however, Macs are still really designed with interaction through the graphical user interface in mind and desired command line programs are not always easy to find or install. Fink, DarwinPorts and MacPorts are well known examples of open source aids to installing programs on Mac OS X. I find, however, that some programs are unavailable, out of date or not specifically tailored to the system you run. If you find any of these to be true, here I offer here some notes from my own experience of installing, from source, various types of program on Macs:
